If you’ve scrolled through Instagram recently, you’ve probably seen the latest skincare craze: dry brushing. While there are many products on the market that promise to banish cellulite and make your skin smoother overnight, few actually provide any results. With dry brushing, however, the difference is noticeable.

I’ve been dry brushing for a while now, and the results are amazing. Even the dermatologists are on board with this skincare trend because dry body brushing can get to the root of cellulite. The problem is actually deeper in our skin than regular lotions and creams can reach.

Keep reading to learn more about the benefits of dry brushing for healthy skin.

What is dry brushing?

Dry brushing involves using a dry brush on your skin in circular motions. The bristles should be firm, so they exfoliate your skin. Move the brush over your skin firmly but slowly. You can repeat this process two to three times per week.

Benefits of dry brushing for healthy skin

There are tons of celebrities singing the praises of dry brushing these days. Influencers and beauty gurus seemed to have jumped on the trend too. Unfortunately, most beauty trends come and go quickly without providing any real benefits.

Dry brushing, however, is actually backed by some proof. This process helps remove dry skin cells on a regular basis, which helps your skin stay renewed. You can actually see instant results after dry brushing, and the results over time are pretty impressive.

The lymphatic vessels in your body drain fluid in your tissue and empty them in your bloodstream. This process delivers cells to your body that can help fight infections and clean up cell debris. Dry brushing can encourage your blood to circulate and help regenerate cells.

The process of dry brushing combines exfoliation with massage. It can make your skin feel smoother and softer while exfoliating can boost your circulation and leave your skin radiant. The benefits of dry brushing include:

  • Supporting your lymphatic system and building up the body’s immune system
  • Exfoliating your skin and removing dead skin cells
  • Removing dirt and oil from your pores
  • Reducing cellulite over time
  • Boosting your natural energy
  • Increasing circulation
  • Improving your digestion
  • Promoting cell regeneration
  • Slowing the aging process for your skin
  • Polishing your skin
  • Stimulating sweat glands

How do you dry brush?

It is best to dry brush before you shower or take a bath. A lot of people prefer to dry brush in the morning because it can boost your energy level and help you feel ready take on the day. You can use a brush, loofah, or dry face cloth.

The standard method of dry brushing involves brushing toward your heart. Start the process at your feet and brush in brisk circular motions or long strokes, whichever you prefer. Once you brush your legs, buttocks, and back, you can move to your abdomen.

Be gentle on sensitive areas and brush firmly on other places of your body, like your feet. For your arms, you can start at your fingers then brush up your arms. Again, you are moving towards your heart. When you brush your shoulders and chest, brush downwards.

If you have skin that is broken or cracked, avoid those areas when dry brushing. Once you finish the process, you can hop in the shower or bath. Cold/hot therapy may promote even more benefits from the dry brushing and help to stimulate the lymphatic system. After your shower, I recommend using oils or lotions to lock in moisture into your skin.

There are many wonderful dry brushes on the market these days. I ordered a natural bristle brush on Amazon. You can check it out here.

Conclusion

Dry brushing is definitely on trend, but it is also really great for your skin. The lymphatic system in your body promotes infection-fighting cells to help you stay healthy. By dry brushing your skin, you can promote lymphatic drainage and regenerate cells more rapidly. While the benefits of reducing cellulite may not be instantly noticeable, dry brushing can exfoliate your skin, unclog your pores, and polish your skin.
